The Stroboscoop Glasses works its sensory mojo by blocking or disrupting vision using a user-adjustable strobe or flicker effect (the glasses are made of curved plastic LCD lenses). By switching between clear and blocked vision, the glasses train the athlete’s brain to anticipate what’s coming when the eyes are blocked. This, in turn, leads to a hypersensitive ability to pick up on subtle motion cues, better visual information processing, and superior timing of motion. In real world terms, the glasses could improve hand-eye coordination, making it easier for a football player to make a tough catch.

Greg Appelbaum, assistant professor of psychiatry at Duke University and first author of the study, explains it a slightly different way. He analogizes humans having “a memory buffer in their brain that keeps information alive for a certain short-lived period.” By wearing these glasses during physical training, athletes “boost the ability to retain information in this buffer.” Think of RAM in a PC, which flushes its contents every time the computer shuts off, whereas humans flush their strobe-enhanced buffer completely within 24 hours.

It comes with a USB charging cable, micro-fiber pouch, and head strap. The glasses can last 10-15 hours before needing to be recharged.
